This is on TV tonight
I hope lots of people watch and give some thought to the process animals have to go through to become our food.Going vegan isn't for everyone, but it's not hard to eat a bit less meat and eggs, or even to choose to buy only organic free range eggs and chicken meat.
As consumers we have the power to change the way things are done. If no one buys caged chicken products, they'll stop selling them. Simple.

I saw this ages ago and thought it was so cool that he did this. People need to see more of where their food comes from rather than just seeing a shrink wrapped piece of crap at Coles or Woolies. If they saw the difference between mass produced and properly butchered and reared meat I'd be hopeful people would buy better and support better meat producers as with any food really.
I read a thing on the slow food blog (Perth edition) where a woman bought a few chickens especially to slaughter at a later stage. She detailed a few things about the process and when it was time got like three or four neighbours families in and they killed the chickens, butchered them and cooked it all as a meal. I thought that was really cool and would definitely love to do that when I have my own house.
It's unfortunate that with chicken there is no better way, as they say, organic or not, free range or not, male chicks still have to die.
Yeah your right about the male chicks, and I guess for me, that's no something I'm comfortable with and so I choose not to eat chicken products. But if your ok with all this stuff, be my guest, dig in. As you say Aaron, there is a big differance between mass produced and small independant farms, or even just families butchering for their own needs.
Tony and I are talking about having chickens at our new house. I see the differance being we won't have 'male chick' problems because we won't have a rooster. I'll know exactly how the hens are treated, and so therefor that sits ok with me.
That's always the problem with giving yourself a label though. If I'm honest I'm not really vegan, because I 'bend the rules' from time to time. But it just makes it easier to explain to people where you sit and what your beliefs are. At the end of the day, if I feel good in myself and my decisions that's all that matters!
