Time off

So I have 2 weeks off and I hope to use the time wisely. My plan is to nurture myself in this time. Once all the partying and boozing of the silly season are over I am going to do a juice fast, then start vegan-ising my life.

I don't know how long I will do this, or at this stage how strictly vegan I will be, but it is something I would like to try out. I have done the vego thing before and had no dramas, so I will be interested to see how I go cutting out dairy and eggs as well. I'm actually really excited to explore the world of unusual grains and all the sorts of interesting vegetable and legume based protein sources.

I think it may help me to buy a few books on the subject and do a fair bit of online reading. What really appeals is that I am going to go into this focusing on eating a balanced diet, but not really worrying about every last thing I put into my mouth. I feel that will be quite a freeing exercise!

Is Tony going Vegan ?

Vegetarianism is something I did by choice for about a year, I found it really easy to do but it doesn't suit my body or the activities I do these days. I need protein. With dairy out finding good protein is just too hard :(

I hope it goes well for you though, I'm all for experimenting with your body!

Well what we are going to do is get rid of all non-vegan food at home, but Tony can eat what he likes when he is away from home. He'll try and support me by eating vegan at home. We'll just see how it goes and adjust things as we need to.

I will be getting a lot of protein from legumes and tempeh (so yummy!) I'm looking forward to experimenting with different foods. I bought some vegan 'cheese' yesterday from Mana health food, so looking forward to giving that a try.

I'm ordering a stack of books from amazon, some of them might be interesting to you in the new year. One of them is about making vegan cheese.

Good luck with your efforts!

It's funny. I don't like fundamentalist ideas of the "I'm better than you because I'm vegan / vegetarian" people.

I do however totally support the views of Fitzy and Melinda who feel like eating healthy and doing something for themselves.

Melinda says I don't have to do what she's doing but I'm happy to try new foods and eat differently. If I feel the need to eat other things I'll just do it at work when I'm not impacting on Melinda. I'm all for being healthy whatever the approach.

I'm proud of my gorgeous one being interested in trying new things :)

Hey maybe we can buy one of those soy milk makers ?? It would totally be worth it now. Keep it at work and you then have a reason to come and see us for your milk pickup :)

I've been interested in changing to soy milk for a bit and especially making tofu.

Tony make sure you get a steak a day :) As much as people go on about legumes and stuff for protein it just ain't enough unless you don't do any exercise at all.

I guess for me personally I couldn't do it due to my lifestyle but I don't see either choice as better than the other both nutritionally or otherwsie.

Anyway, we'll talk about he Soy thing soon, I just couldn't justify $150 or whatever myself for osmething I might not use much.

I think the health benefits are potentially indirect.

By saying you want to eat more vegan / vegetarian you are focusing on what you eat where as right now we tend to eat anything which can include the junk food variety.

There is the issue of trying not to miss out on important nourishment but paying attention to what we eat and avoiding the obvious bad things will be a good start.

I like the idea of soy milk, but it just turns my stomach, I really have a hard time drinking the stuff. I'd be ok with it in things, but on cereal or in coffee etc, I just find it toto rich. Rice dream rice milk is going to be my most likely milk substitute.

I'll have to find other elaborate ideas to come visit. Or just turn up for no reason at all. Maybe I can be the hug fairy? Or a guest judge for 'porn of the day'?

Would love to check out your book Adam, thanks :)

I guess I see the notion that becoming vegan or vegetarian means you are automatically going to be eating healthier as a myth. You can eat meat and be just as healthy as the healthiest vegan. Actually you can be healthier. No doubt.

I think it makes you look outside teh box for new flavours though which is great, also you have teh money to spend on fresher produce and different things. Meat is expensive compared to veges and so on.

Soy milk can be foul, though I had some brand of 'lite' soy milk and it was actually not bad.

Hopefully you guys will do fine. A lot of the 'substitutes' just aren't all there though and are nutritionally worse.

Vitasoy! It's called Soy Milky Lite. It'd dee-fucking-licious. I have it on cereal, in protein shakes, and in tea/coffee. All other brands blow.

Ps, it's also white, not grey like the others.
